You must register before you can view this text. Description: Constructing concise and correct proofs is one of the most challenging aspects of learning to work with advanced mathematics. Meeting this challenge is a defining moment for those considering a career in mathematics or related fields. Mathematical Thinking and Writing teaches readers to construct proofs and communicate with the precision necessary for working with abstraction. It is based on two premises: composing clear and accurate mathematical arguments is critical in abstract mathematics, and that this skill requires development and support. Abstraction is the destination, not the starting point. Maddox methodically builds toward a thorough understanding of the proof process, demonstrating and encouraging mathematical thinking along the way. Skillful use of analogy clarifies abstract ideas. Clearly presented methods of mathematical precision provide an understanding of the nature of mathematics and its defining structure. |

Paperback: 64 pages Data: April 2004 Format: DJVU Description: "First 1000 Words" is a picture reference book with numerous scenes similar to the picture on the cover of the book. Even though this appears to be a children's book, I recommend it to adults who are trying to learn Arabic, too. All of the words in the book are nouns, so a more appropriate title might be "First 1000 Nouns in Arabic". The book is really easy to use. Under each picture is the arabic word (in Arabic script). Beneath that is the English transliteration. This is helpful if you don't know how to read Arabic script or aren't very good at is. For example, under the picture of a fish, you will find the Arabic script, then the tansliteration of fish in Arabic, which is "samak". A glossary in the back of the book helps you easily locate the word you might be looking for and to clear up any confusion caused by a picture that could mean two or more things, like a picture of a wall, the word beneath the picture could be the word for "brick" or for "wall". The glossary eliminate this confusion. |

Paperback: 176 pages Data: May 30, 2007 Format: PDF Description: Nuclear physics investigates the properties and behavior of the central portion, or nucleus, of the atom. This branch of physics had perhaps the biggest impact on the world in the 20th century because it evolved into the knowledge used to build the most destructive weapons people have ever known. The atomic bombs that ended World War II, and the weapons race that followed, changed the course of history. But applications of nuclear physics have also provided enormous energy for useful purposes, generating about 16 percent of the world's electricity. "Particles and the Universe" documents how modern physics formed and how it continues to evolve. Each chapter of this book delves into the observations, theories, and tests of a particular topic, including nuclear physics, quantum mechanics, particle physics, relativity, and cosmology. |

Paperback: 48 pages Data: October 24, 2006 Format: PDF Description: In July 1863, after having observed a forward column of Union General George G. Meade's cavalry, General Robert E. Lee sent his 75,000 men of the Army of Northern Virginia to meet the 97,000 strong Union Army of the Potomac. Of more than 2,000 land engagements of the American Civil War, Gettysburg ranks as one of the most horrific and devastating battles; more men actually fought and died on this battlefield than in any other encounter on North American soil and the battle itself marked the beginning of the end for the Confederacy. |
